State police in Vermont say the person of interest who was being sought in connection with the suspicious death of a missing Massachusetts woman was shot and killed by police Tuesday night.According to police, the person of interest was being sought by the authorities as part of the ongoing investigation into the disappearance and death of 23-year-old Mary Anderson of Harvard, Massachusetts. Anderson, whose body was found early Tuesday morning inside her pickup truck parked on Elliot Street in Brattleboro, had been missing since the weekend. Vermont State Police said the name of the deceased man was being withheld pending notification of his next of kin, however, Massachusetts State Police said the identity of the man as Matthew Davis, 34, of Fitchburg. Hours earlier, Vermont police said they were looking to locate and speak with Davis, Anderson’s former boyfriend. Police said he may have information relevant to the investigation.According to Vermont State Police, the person of interest was located Tuesday night while walking in West Brattleboro by members of the Vermont State Police and the Brattleboro Police Department. “During an attempt to speak with the man at about 7:45 pm, he was shot by police and has been pronounced deceased,” state police said. Police said Davis was armed with a knife.Anderson was last seen at about 10:30 pm Saturday in Hudson, New Hampshire driving her navy blue 2017 Toyota Tacoma.The truck was found with a body inside at 12:55 am Tuesday on Elliot Street in Brattleboro, police said.Earlier Tuesday, the Elliot Street scene and the truck were processed by the Vermont State Police Crime Scene Search Team. Vermont’s Chief Medical Examiner’s Office in Burlington will perform an autopsy to determine the cause and manner of Anderson’s death. Anderson’s family told WCVB the pair recently broke up after dating for three years. “They just broke up in November,” Sheila Anderson said. “They were going together for three years and something happened in their relationship and she said, ‘I’m done.'” “The sad part for me as a mom … whatever she experienced these last four days. Just heart wrenching. She was alone. She wasn’t with her mom or her siblings. I think that’s the devastating part. Not knowing what she was going through the last four days,” Sheila Anderson said. State police detectives assigned to the Worcester County District Attorney’s office and Massachusetts State Police were also conducting a search Tuesday morning on Still River Road in Harvard in relation to the woman’s disappearance.Sheila Anderson said her daughter was supposed to be driving home Saturday night after hanging out with friends in Hudson, New Hampshire. She said the family constantly updates each other on their whereabouts, so when her daughter didn’t come home Saturday night, she knew something was wrong.Anderson was reported missing by her family Sunday evening.5 Investigates has learned that Davis was convicted for violently stabbing a man in Pittsfield in 2009. The victim was the boyfriend of the mother of his two children.She told WCVB that Davis spent several years in prison for that crime.According to a police report obtained by 5 Investigates, Davis was hiding in the women’s bedroom closet. He jumped out and stabbed her new boyfriend, who was in the room with her.Police found Davis hiding next to a snow bank a few hours later and arrested him.
